Smithtown Christian School Long Island About Us

Who we are and what we believe…
“God has created all individuals in His image with unique gifts and talents; these gifts were meant to be exercised, built upon, refined, and honed in order to fulfill His plan and purpose for that individual, the community, and the world in order to bring Him honor and glory.”
 -Elizabeth Anderson

Because we seek to use best practice, we:

  • are accountable to God and one another.
  • appeal to the authority of Scripture, SCS school board policies, and administrative imperatives.
  • adhere to federal (such as FERPA) and NYS law as well as the ethical guidelines of our profession.
  • acquire continuing education and training to address student needs through accurate advising.
  • advocate and allow a quality education to be accessible for all students.
  • and acknowledge confidentiality within legal and ethical limits and under the protocol of informed consent.
One of the most important decisions a young person makes concerns what to do after high school and beyond. The Office of School Counseling at Smithtown Christian School is committed to helping students seek God’s direction, make decisions and plan their future. In conjunction with the mission of Smithtown Christian School, the Ten Outcomes, and solid Biblical integration, the comprehensive School Counseling program (PK-12) incorporates the American School Counseling Association’s (ASCA) National Model in order to provide each student with the necessary tools to be successful in today’s world.

The Office of School Counseling at Smithtown Christian School seeks to provide all students the opportunity to discover who God created them to be, their unique personality characteristics, and their strengths, gifts, and talents to enhance student growth academically, vocationally, personally and spiritually.”
-Elizabeth Anderson, Director of School Counseling

A.    Program Philosophy
God has created all individuals in His image, each with unique characteristics, gifts and talents which can be used to fulfill His plan and purpose for that individual as well as in the community (and communities) in which that individual is involved. Exodus 35:30 – 36:2 presents a clear picture of persons who God filled with His spirit, giving them wisdom, understanding, and ability (talent) to design and create the Tabernacle and all its components where He was to dwell with His people the Israelites. Jeremiah 29:11 states “For I know the plans I have for you…” and Psalm 139:14 “You are fearfully and wonderfully made…” are two more scriptures that substantiate God’s personal involvement in an individual’s life and purpose.
Since this was true in Old Testament times, we can conclude that it is also true in our present day.  When a person exercises, builds on, refines and sharpens their talents, not only will they be fulfilling the purpose for which they were created and be able to lead a satisfying life, but their entire existence will also serve as an expression of worship to God. Their life will point back to the Creator, the one who gave them the gift. (Matthew 5:16) This understanding supports a foundational philosophy for the SCS School Counseling Program.

B.    Mission Statement
The mission of Smithtown Christian School is to teach with excellence in the classroom and through life on life influence to produce exceptional young Christian leaders with a heart for God, a mind for Truth and a passion to change the World.
The mission of the counseling program follows closely. It is to provide opportunities for students to discover who God has created them to be. They are individuals with unique personality characteristics, with strengths, with gifts and talents. The aim is to enhance their growth academically, vocationally, and personally.

To Students and Parents:
Christ has given each of us special abilities---whatever he wants us to have out of his rich storehouse of gifts. Ephesians 4:7 (LB)

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

You [Lord] made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. Psalm 139:13-14 (NLT)

These are encouraging, optimistic and exciting statements about who we are, our future and what the God of the universe has in store for us! God created each of us with strengths, abilities, talents, gifts and interests which he fully intends for us to use. But how do we know what those gifts are and what path(s) that we should follow?

SCS has provided a tool to help you discover how God designed you; your personality preferences; your strengths; your interests; and your learning style. It is called Naviance Student-- a web-based tool designed to support student success and to plan for college and career. To visit our school’s site, use an internet browser to connect to: .

  • " The service-learning program at SCS goes hand and hand with Christian education. Students learn about loving Jesus and helping those in need. Then, they practice what they learn by going out and being the "hands and feet" of Jesus to their communities. "
    Dr. Anna Ramos, SCS parent

  • " Knowing that our children are going to school and learning about Christ and hearing biblical truth that is not altered has confirmed to us over and over that SCS is the best choice we could make for our kids' education. "
Doug & Kelly Jansson, SCS parents

  • " If you aim for heaven, you might get earth thrown in, besides. Aim for heavenly values by sending your kids to Smithtown Christian School, even if it means sacrifice. "
    Daniel Buttafuoco, SCS Grandparent

  • "SCS has been an incredible blessing to our family. Knowing our children are in a Christ-centered environment where they are loved, nurtured and prayed for by their teachers and other members of their school family is so important to us. "

    Rachel Cardwell, SCS Parent

  • "It's impossible to enter this school without coming into the presence of God. It's the only thing that can change lives and because of the faithful teachers, staff and culture of SCS, it changed mine."
    Pastor Jeffrey Eichenlaub, SCS Alum
