SERVICE LEARNING

We believe as a school the importance of giving back to our community and the world at large. Our Service Learning Project does just that! We take what we teach in the classroom, bring it out to the world, with the purpose of making things better.
We have everything from a Veterans Appreciation Dinner to Pollution Cleanup Projects. We see smiles not only on the faces receiving the help, but smiles just as big on our students!

Kindergarten & 11th Grade: Their project combines existing curricula about the armed services and community helpers with connections to the military and supports veterans in our local area.

1st Grade: Partners with Helping Hands Rescue Mission, a local ministry that provides food, clothing, hygiene items and more for children in the local community.

2nd Grade: The teachers integrate their reading and writing curriculum with servicing a local assisted living facility.

3rd Grade: Works with a nature center to help support community programs and integrates their English, math and science.

4th Grade: Infuses their writing, math and science with a service project to sponsor our church’s food pantry and a larger food pantry ministry in the area.

5th Grade: Integrates math and history by researching percentages of people types and populations, topography, location, climate and human environment interaction. Their goal was to help students develop a Biblical worldview by creating an awareness of missionaries, their work and their needs.

6th Grade: The goal to visit local parks in order to remove invasive species and to plant native species.

7th Grade: Their project is based on their Life Science class content and focused on agriculture through aquaponics and community gardening.

8th Grade: Their project focuses on river and groundwater health.

9th Grade: Their project supports science and math focused on preservation and conservation of the environment through pollution collection.

10th Grade Spanish: They implement their project to connect studies on immigration with service to the homeless community.

12th Grade Senior Seminar: Their Capstone Project is a student-led project. The students will take their prior knowledge of service-learning and their passions/interests and propose a project for the year which is overseen by their teacher/facilitator.

WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY…

  • " The service-learning program at SCS goes hand and hand with Christian education. Students learn about loving Jesus and helping those in need. Then, they practice what they learn by going out and being the "hands and feet" of Jesus to their communities. "
    Dr. Anna Ramos, SCS parent

  • " Knowing that our children are going to school and learning about Christ and hearing biblical truth that is not altered has confirmed to us over and over that SCS is the best choice we could make for our kids' education. "
Doug & Kelly Jansson, SCS parents

  • " If you aim for heaven, you might get earth thrown in, besides. Aim for heavenly values by sending your kids to Smithtown Christian School, even if it means sacrifice. "
    Daniel Buttafuoco, SCS Grandparent

  • "SCS has been an incredible blessing to our family. Knowing our children are in a Christ-centered environment where they are loved, nurtured and prayed for by their teachers and other members of their school family is so important to us. "

    Rachel Cardwell, SCS Parent

  • "It's impossible to enter this school without coming into the presence of God. It's the only thing that can change lives and because of the faithful teachers, staff and culture of SCS, it changed mine."
    Pastor Jeffrey Eichenlaub, SCS Alum
